About
How can we use data to navigate uncertainty and make better decisions? This is the central question in Marcel’s work. His approach combines Computation, Conversation and Code: building models, fostering dialogue, and setting ethical principles for the responsible use of technology.
The future is never fixed – it is a field of possibilities. Which futures are probable, which are desirable, and how can we shape them? Marcel’s work connects data, dialogue and values to answer these questions:
- Computation – Models and simulations make possible futures tangible. With data science and microsimulation, we explore scenarios and help organizations understand complex developments.
- Conversation – Futures are always negotiated. Through dialogues across science, politics, business and society, we facilitate exchange and enable collective orientation.
- Code & Codex – Futures need principles. With a values-based view of technology – especially artificial intelligence – we develop responsible guardrails for innovation.
Marcel is Professor of Data Science at the Digital Business University of Applied Sciences (DBU), founder of Impact Distillery (mStats DS GmbH), co-founder & CTO at kaleidemoskop GmbH, and Associate Researcher at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society (HIIG).
Previously, he spent seven years as a researcher and software developer at the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) at the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin).
With a background in sociology, statistics, and business informatics, Marcel brings a unique perspective to the role of data in social discourse and the sustainable management of organizations. His work bridges analytical precision, collective reflection, and normative orientation – enabling decision-making in the face of uncertainty.
